| Berühmt wurde Chet Baker als Trompeter im Quartett von Gerry Mulligan. Die 1952 veröffentlichte Single "My Funny Valentine" wurde zum Hit und war künftig eine Art Markenzeichen für Baker. Baker wird oft Cool Jazzer bezeichnet, zum Teil vermutlich, weil man ihn mit Bandleader Mulligan assoziiert, der neben Lennie Tristano als bedeutende Figur dieser Stilrichtung gilt.
